India has recorded 2,61,500 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the biggest daily surge in cases.

The fresh cases have taken the total number of infections in India, since the pandemic began, to 1,47,88,109. India is now the worst-hit country.

As per the Union Health Ministry, India reported 1501 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the fatality count to 1,77,150. The actives cases in the country are over ten lakh and the total recoveries are 12,156,529.

Last week, India was witnessing over one lakh cases and now the daily cases have crossed the two lakh mark. This is the fourth day when over 2 lakh cases have been reported in the country.

The shortage of oxygen, medicines and vaccines have been raised by the states amid the surge in fresh cases. Total recoveries in the last 24 hours are 1,38,423, taking the total number to 1,28,09,643. The number of active cases now is 18,01,316.

The surge has forced many states and Union Territories to impose fresh restrictions in order to curb the spread of the virus. Night curfews, weekend curfews have been announced in the states.
