Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police received 108 medals for the highest number in the gallantry, followed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) seventy-six on the occasion of the seventy-first Republic Day.
The Union Territory Police, which is heavily involved in counter-militancy operations in Kashmir Valley, has also received three top medals from the President for Gallantry (PPMG).
A total of 105 police medals for gallantry (PMG) and three PPMG were handed over to the J-K police, followed by seventy-five PMG to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which is also used in the UT for counter-militancy tasks.
Abdul Jabbar (IPS), Gh. Hassan Sheikh (Deputy Superintendent of Police) and Asif Iqbal Qureshi (Constable) from J-K and Late Constable Utpal Rabha (Posthumous) of CRPF will receive the highest police gallantry award for their valour during counter-militancy operations. Mr. Jabbar was SSP Anantnag and was crucial in the 2016 encounter of Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Burhan Wani.
The medals are awarded biannually on the eves of Republic and Independence Day.
