There was a dramatic decrease in the number of militant attacks last year in Kashmir region as infiltration attempts also registered a fall, the Union Home Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Ministry told the parliament that 244 militant attacks took place last year in which 62 government forces’ personnel and 37 civilians were killed.

It was a drop of more than 50 percent compared to two previous years when 594 attacks were carried out in 2019 and 614 attacks were carried out in 2018.

The drop in the number of militant attacks has coincided with a decline in infiltration of militants from Pakistan as last year recorded the lowest infiltration.

The ministry said 99 attempts to infiltrate were recorded in 2020, compared to 216 infiltration attempts in 2019 and 328 attempts recorded in 2018.

In 2021, the Union Home Ministry said, no infiltration attempts were recorded in January.

While there was a sharp decrease last year in infiltration attempts, which means fewer militants sneaked into Kashmir valley, there was a dramatic rise in ceasefire violations.

The ministry said 5133 ceasefire violations were recorded last year, which was highest since the ceasefire came into existence along the Line of Control in 2003.

Indian and Pakistani armies, however, agreed to maintain the ceasefire last month since when there are no reports of violations from anywhere along the Line of Control.

The decrease in all parameters of violence in Kashmir has coincided with the FATF scrutiny of Pakistan as Islamabad has been asked roll back all support to militants.
