Jammu and Kashmir police Saturday arrested the mother-in-law of a woman who committed suicide by setting herself on fire on 11 July in Chatibandi village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora.
An unnamed police official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that they have booked a woman, who happens to be the mother in law of a one who committed suicide after setting herself ablaze in Chattibandi village on July 11. The victim aged 30, passed away in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital due to intense burn injuries.
The official said that the deceased victim had stated in her statement before police at the hospital that her in-laws especially mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been harassing her, forcing her to take an extreme step.
The official said police have registered a case and the investigation was still going on. “But the mother in law of the deceased has been arrested for forcing her son’s wife to commit suicide,” he said, adding that the case FIR Number 25/2020 under section 306 at police station Aragam, Bandipora. He said that further investigation in the case is going on.
The mother-in-law of the deceased woman has been put behind bars and her COVID-19 testing has been done by a team of doctors, the results of which have come as positive. “She has been shifted to an isolation centre,” police sources told KNO.
The family members of the deceased alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws. They said that she was married three years ago and ever since was continuously being harassed. “She was tortured and harassed by her in-laws from the first day of her marriage. Those who forced her to take extreme step should be punished as per the law,” they demanded. (KNO)
