Srinagar: To mark the 31st anniversary of the Gaw Kadal massacre, a shutdown is being observed in parts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Eyewitnesses told The Kashmir Walla that a shutdown is being observed in Lal Chowk, Gaw Kadal and Maisuma areas of Srinagar to mark the day when over 50 people were killed in the ‘Gaw Kadal’ massacre and hundreds were injured by the government forces. However, police in its FIR mentioned the death of 22 persons.

On 21 January 1990, over 50 civilians were shot dead as armed forces opened fire on a procession passing over the bridge that connects Basant Bagh with Maisuma.

The incident had shaken the Valley evoking widespread anger against the then Governor Jagmohan who was running the affairs of the state under the governor’s rule.
