Amid the high alert government forces in view of upcoming Independence Day on 15 August, militants fired on a police party at Nowgam bypass, leaving two cops dead and another critically injured, reported a local news agency, Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
An unnamed police official told KNO that two policemen were killed in firing by militants while another cop was injured. Kashmir police tweeted that two police injured in the attack succumbed on way to the hospital.
Another local news agency, Global News Service, identified the killed policemen in their report as Ishfaq Ayoub and Fayaz Ahmad, both from IRP’s 20 batallion. While Mr. Ayoub had bullet wounds on the right side of chest and leg, Mr. Ahmad had injuries on the right thigh.
“Area has been cordoned off,” he told KNO. The police official said that massive search is on in the area. (Inputs from agencies)
