A sitting Sri Lankan MP was beaten to death by anti-government protesters in a “horrific murder scene”, quoting an eye-witness The Telegraph reported.

Meanwhile, the country’s new prime minister warned there is just one day’s worth of fuel left.

Last Monday, the Sri Lankan police alleged a ruling party politician, Amarakeerthi Athukorala, had shot dead an anti-government protester before turning his gun on himself, in the town of Nittambuwa, some 25 miles from Colombo.

But, a postmortem report from Wathupitiwala Hospital said Mr Athukorala died after he was beaten to death, suffering multiple body fractures.

Quoting an eye-witness The Telegraph reported that Athukorala was killed by an angry mob, describing “a horrific murder scene” play out as they were shopping for groceries.

“I saw at a distance two people were running and one had a pistol in his hand, a large crowd was chasing them and the two were trying to get inside a cloth shop but I saw some of the crowd get hold of their collars and start beating them,” said Priyantha Gunasena, 49, a resident of Nittambuwa.

“I heard people screaming with pain and around 40 minutes later the crowd dispersed and there were two people lying on the ground covered in blood and only wearing their underpants.”
