Srinagar: Shutdown and mourning events were observed on the funeral of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Kashmir parts on Monday.
Soleimani 62, who headed Iranian elite Quds force was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq.
On Monday a shutdown was observed in Alamgari Bazar and Saida Kadal area of Srinagar and other parts of district Budgam.
Events like Marsiya Khawani and Quranic recitation have been happening since Saturday across Shia dominated areas of the valley in the remembrance of Soleimani.
There has been anger and grief among Shias across the world over the killing of Soleimani who was seen as the right hand of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenai who is revered among Shia Muslims globally.
“His death fell exactly like Burhan Wani’s killing in 2016.” Said a resident of Budgam while trying to explain why they were protesting the death of Soleimani.
Meanwhile a protest rally in which hundreds of people participated was taken in central Kashmir’s Budgam area.
The protesters raised anti-US, anti- Israel and pro-Kashmir slogans during the rally.
People protesting said that Suleimani was a man who stood against hegemony of America and was a symbol of resistance, “He was a ray of hope for those protesting the oppression across the world. It is for this reason you saw Hamas leader who is a Sunni participating in his funeral in Iran.” Said Rahil Husssain a protesting youth in his early twenties.
Soleimani was considered as the man behind decimation of ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
