Srinagar: Two more militants were killed in a gunfight that broke between militants and the government forces in Sugoo-Hendhama village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday, taking the toll of killed militants to five.

A local news agency, Kashmir News Observer (KNO), quoted unnamed official sources saying that five militants have been killed in the gunfight while the operation has ended in the area.

Earlier, an official told KNO that a joint team of the police, the army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifle, and Central Reserve Police Force, launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, thus triggering an encounter. “Five militants were killed in the gunfight. The operation has now ended,” officials said.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended the mobile internet services in the district.

Also, nine militants, including top Hizbul Mujahideen commanders, were killed in two separate gunfights at Reban and Pinjura villages of the district on 6 and 7 June. (KNO)
