Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday late night said that militants are trapped in a mosque in Shopian town of south Kashmir, where a gunfight has been on going since afternoon.
The police also said that brother of one militant was sent inside the mosque to persuade him to surrender.
“Brother of holed up #terrorist & local Imamsahab sent inside mosque to persuade the #terrorists to come out & #surrender,” the police said in a tweet.
The police said that the efforts are on to save the mosque while the operation is going on.
Earlier, three unidentified militants were killed and as many soldiers were injured in the gunfight.
The gunfight broke out between militants and a joint team of Police, Army’s 44RR and CRPF in Jan Mohalla in main town on Thursday afternoon.
As the joint team encircled the suspected spot following launching of a cordon-and -search operation, the hiding militants fired which was retaliated, triggering off the gunfight.
“Chief of proscribed (militant) outfit AGuH (JeM) is trapped. Operation is going on. Further details shall follow,” police said in a tweet.
The identity of the slain militants is being established, the police officer said. He said three soldiers injured in the gunfight have been hospitalized. Sources said condition of one of them is stated to serious.
