Government forces on Saturday pressed helicopters into service to trace a group of militants in a forest belt of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

The gunfight between the two sides had erupted earlier in the day in Choor Ki Gali forest area near Sedaw and Hirpora villages.

The contact with the militants was later lost, the sources said.

Sources told The Kashmir Walla that militants may have managed to escape following which helicopters are pressed into service to scan the forests.

The sources said the militants are believed to be three to four in number.

Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir police in a tweet had said that a gunfight had broke out between militants and forces, “#Encounter has started at Choor ki Gali Sedaw area of #Hurpora_Shopian. Police and Army are on the job. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice”
