Muharram processions were held peacefully across the district with the attendance of devotees in large numbers.

Speaking to a local news agency, Kashmir News Service (KNS), SSP Srinagar Rakesh Balwal said there was excellent cooperation between Shia devotees and police.

“We didn’t use force anywhere today. I guess it would be for the first time that not even a single tear gas shell has been fired till now and lathicharge also not used at all to restrict the Muharram processions,” he said.

Notably, the District administration of Srinagar has already notified routes for conducting Muharram Processions and has already been communicated to the community leaders to perform the ceremonies peacefully.

Meanwhile, Srinagar Police informed that today’s Muharram procession from Guru Bazar to Dal Gate has not been allowed this year as well and restrictions are placed on this. People may be facing inconvenience in travel, which is regretted, but this is to ensure a violence-free eighth Muharram. Historically violence has been seen on this day.

The situation is normal so far and some youth tried to come out at certain places individually on prohibited routes but were taken into preventive custody by police without using any force.

Srinagar police again request people of the city to respect the rule of law and don’t appreciate/endorse any rumor about the procession rally. (KNS)
