Srinagar: Panic gripped parts of valley after tremors were felt by the residents on Tuesday evening as earthquake measuring 3.6 on richter scale rocked Kashmir.

In Srinagar people left their residences after the blast like incident shook houses and other structures at around 9:40 PM.

On social media people posted queries on the mysterious blast even as residents in south Kashmir felt nothing, “I am seeing people in Srinagar posting about some blast or earthquake, let me tell you felt nothing in Anantnag,” Ashina Bhat on wrote her Facebook.

While people were trying to make sense of what had happened, Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhar taking to his twitter handle said, “The “earthquake like situation” confirmed by seismologists as an actual earthquake of magnitude 3.6. Epicentre close to us,”

He however deleted the tweet later.

Aamir Ali of the disaster management department said it was not recorded on the automatic seismograph, as the magnitude was probably low.

“I am in touch with the National Seismological Centre, New Delhi. It was not recorded on the automatic seismograph, as the magnitude was probably low. They are trying to triangulate it manually to find out the epicenter, in case it was an earthquake. I will update as soon as I receive the update,’ he said.

Later Mr. Ali said the earthquake measured 3.6 on the Richter scale with Latitude 34.15N and Longitude 74.70E.

However, people on social media refused to believe that the earthquake was mild, “If that was “mild”, I don’t what intense would be!” wrote Waseem Mushtaq a journalist.

Others simply refused to believe that it was an earthquake, “It felt like a mine explosion, not an earthquake #Kashmir,” a Twitter user wrote.

Amidst all the panic memes also hit the social media. One of which was about the Hrithik Roshan starrer Koi Milgaya character of an alien “Jadoo”. A picture of Jadoo morphed into landscape of Srinagar’s Ghanta Ghar was shared by thousands on social media websites.
