Srinagar: A minor girl has been allegedly molested by her neighbour in Srinagar’s Soura area.
A First Information Report (FIR 27/2022) has been filed by her family and the accused was booked under section 376 AB of Indian Penal Code, 7 POCSO on 31 March, a senior police official told The Kashmir Walla.
The accused was arrested on the same evening by the local police. As per the officials, the accused and the family of the minor are neighbors in Soura’s Vicharnag area. “The incident came to light after the girl complained at her home that she was touched inappropriately.”
The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Amit Ambarkar.
The girl was medically examined to establish the facts in the case in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) in the locality.
As per the medical report, the rape wasn’t established.
“Accused is a lab assistant in a Srinagar government school,” the official told The Kashmir Walla. “[However] the girl was allegedly molested in her locality and not at the school.”
In a statement, the police said: “Two days ago, there was a complaint lodged by a family about suspected molestation of a minor girl, wherein Srinagar police lodged FIR under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO act.”
Earlier, local media reports claimed that the report pressed rape charges. However, it was clarified that “there was no complaint of rape by family of members of minor girl, which was corroborated by medical examination as well.”
“Some unscrupulous elements are trying to give this incident a communal colour by giving motivated statements with intention to create communal divide,” the police stated in the statement. “Public is requested not to pay heed to such rumours.”
