A gunfight has started between militants and the government forces in Chakoora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.

“Encounter has started at Chakoora area of Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

An official said that a joint of team of police, army and CRPF after receiving information about the presence of militants launched search operation in the area.

An official said that as the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, hiding militants fired upon the party, which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight.

“Exchange of fire is on, two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area,” an official said. (KS)
