Food Safety Wing of Drugs and Food Control Organization, Kashmir, commenced its 14 day edible vegetable oil, multisource edible oil and vanaspati surveillance drive on Monday.

The drive undertaken on the directions of Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration will remain effective from 1 August 2022 up to 14 August 2022.

“On day one of the drive, 05 samples of Mustard Oil, 02 Samples of Vanaspati, 03 Samples of Multisource Edible Oil and 08 Refined Soyabean Oil were lifted for testing”, an official told a local news agency, Global News Service (GNS).

The surveillance drive, he said, is being undertaken to collect the data for non-compliance on part of the manufacturers and to curb the adulteration of edible oil in the food market as it constitutes a significant part of the daily basket.

The Deputy Commissioner, Food Safety, Kashmir, Shagufta Jalal, in the meantime said that a calendar has been devised by the department to ensure staggered sampling so that a wide range of edible oil samples are lifted. She said that the testing of these samples shall be done on a fast track basis.

She added that the department is committed to ensure safe and wholesome food for the consumers and such commodity specific drives shall continue in future as well. (GNS)
