Several schools continued to remain locked in Tral for the third consecutive day as landowners have been demanding jobs in lieu of land donated by them for setting up schools.

Reports said that the landowners locked over a dozen primary and upper primary schools on Tuesday due to which classwork remained suspended.

“Since last three authorities have been pacifying landowners to reopen school as their files have been already forwarded to higher ups,” they said.

The landowners said that they only allowed the construction of schools on their land after the government promised them permanent jobs in these institutions.

“Since then over a decade has passed but the government is yet to fulfill the promises. We brought the issues into the notice of concerned authorities many times but nothing happened,” they said, adding they were left with the option but to lock the schools.

They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that deserving people will get the promised job.

Zonal Education Officer Largam said that he has visited schools and so far 11 schools have reopened out of 13.

He said that the rest will be reopened tomorrow.

“We have written to higher ups to consider nearest kin instead of persons who are overage now and who have educational qualification below class 8,” he added. (KNO)
