Srinagar: Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister (CM) of Jammu and Kashmir (J-K), has called the decision to extend Mehbooba Mufti, also a former CM of J-K, “unbelievably cruel and retrograde”.
“Nothing she has done or said in any way justifies the way the Indian state has treated her and the others detained,” he said. “For a government that is making tall claims about normality in J-K the last few days coupled with the extension of Ms Mufti’s detention is proof enough that Modi ji has single handedly pushed J-K back decades.”
Abdullah, and his father, Farooq Abdullah, and Mufti were detained in August 2019 alongside many prominent political leaders as the Central government revocked J-K’s special status and clamped down in Kashmir.
After Mufti’s detention under the Public Safety Act was extended by three months today evening, the authorities also extended the detention of Ali Muhammad Sagar and Sartaj Madani as well.
