Srinagar: Several policemen were injured when they were attacked by a group of people who had offered Friday congregational prayers amid Covid-19 lockdown in Jamia Masjid Gunistan in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

Eye witnesses told that people in a good number had assembled in Jamia Masjid Gunistan to offer Friday prayers. Police came to know that some people had gathered to offer prayers, rushed to the masjid along with several officials from the administration.

“As soon as police reached the spot, some of people fled away from the spot while as some started chanting slogans and pelted stones over police party. The gathering got disrupted but in the melee and clashes, several policemen sustained injuries,” eye-witnesses said.

Senior superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, Rahul Malik said when Police party led by officers and a officers from the administration reached the spot, stone-pelting took place.

“Police used mild force to disperse the crowd in which some policemen sustained minor injuries. Situation was brought under control. We detained 16 violators from the spot and necessary legal action would follow,” he said. (KNO)
