The Gender Equality working group under the aegis of C20 Chair Sri Mata Amritanandamayi for G20 2023, held four workshops to promote a more gender equitable tomorrow, reaching over two hundred lower and higher secondary students of the Saadi Memorial Institute of Education along with its degree students of law in Pulwama, Kashmir, run by former registrar of Srinagar College Cluster Registrar Prof. Hamid Sheikh.
“For a gender harmonious community we have to design interventions for young school going students” was one of the most critical recommendations that came through the gender experts and practitioners from across the globe during the C20 deliberations of the Gender Equality working group, headed by Dr Bhavani Rao, UNESCO Chair for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality.
In the workshops spanning standard five to nine, Assistant research analyst and trainer Radhika Shetty taught students to recognise and challenge rigid gender roles in society through critical thinking activities and dialogue. Students also learn about the roles emotions play in our life, where do we typically learn them and how to express them effectively. A session employing techniques from theater were also introduced to help boost students confidence and oratory skills. The concluding session was an interactive session aimed at building menstrual awareness and hygiene, busting myths about menstruation, right nutrition and learning simple yoga asanas to curb menstrual cramps was conducted for all girls between standard five and ten.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and UNESCO India recently launched a campaign SpotlightRed aiming to address the challenges related to menstrual health, hygiene management and nutrition for teachers and educators and young adults.
Students participated in the C20 One Million Lights campaign that expresses gratitude for all the people who have positively impacted their life and formed the C20 logo and expressed by their full support by taking a pledge to promoting a gender equal tomorrow
