Union Minister Prakash Javadkar, while addressing a public meeting in Delhi on Sunday, said that he witnessed the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya on 6 December 1992, and that it was a historical mistake which was corrected.
“When foreign invaders like Babur came to India, why did he destroy Ram mandir? There are lakhs of temples in India. He realised that the soul of the country resides in the Ram temple,” said Javadkar.
He added: “It was not a masjid as no prayers were offered there. I am a witness of the incident, I was a part of the Yuva Morcha back then.”
He said that a day before, he was present at Ayodhya as a karsevak and lakhs of them slept around the “disputed area” on a platform. “The next day the world saw how a historical mistake was corrected.”
All thirty-two accused in the Babri masjid demolition were acquitted by the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in September last year.
