Home affairs minister of Australia, Peter Dutton has been diagnosed with coronavirus.

According to a report by AFR, Dutton has said in a statement he woke up with a temperature and sore throat on Friday, days after a visit to the United States.

“I immediately contacted the Queensland Department of Health and was subsequently tested for COVID-19. I was advised by Queensland Health this afternoon that the test had returned positive,” he said.

Peter Dutton confirmed he has been diagnosed with coronavirus.

“It is the policy of Queensland Health that anyone who tests positive is to be admitted into hospital and I have complied with their advice.

“I feel fine and will provide an update in due course.”

A spokeswoman said it was not clear how the Dickson MP had contracted the virus.

Mr Dutton is a member of the national security committee of cabinet and oversees a key department in the national response to Coronavirus.

He travelled to the United States for meetings about online child exploitation and is the first high profile Australian to test positive.

Mr Dutton attended a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Mr Morrison’s office has been contacted for comment.

The diagnosis could see cabinet ministers and senior staff being tested or going into self-isolation.
