A laborer drowned in river Jhelum while extracting sand in the Sonwar area of Srinagar on Thursday morning even as a rescue operation has been launched.

Official sources told a local news agency, Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that Mohammad Jaffar Wani (22) resident of Banihal drowned in the river Jhelum while extracting sand.

They said that a rescue operation has been launched by Srinagar River police and SDRF to retrieve his body.

Notably, the river police saved the lives of two teenagers who drowned in Jhelum while taking bath a few days ago. (KNO)
