A Delhi court on Wednesday adjourned its decision on activist Umar Khalid’s bail application in a case involving communal rioting in Delhi in February 2020, reported Bar and Bench.

The order is “under correction,” said Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who has scheduled the verdict for 12 p.m. on Thursday.

This is the third time Khalid’s bail has been postponed after the court reserved its decision on 3 March.

The bail order was supposed to be issued on 14 March, but the court postponed it until 21 March after the defence counsel failed to file their written representations in the case. After Justice Rawat stated that the court was not ready, it was again postponed to 23 March.

Between 23 February and 26 February 2020, clashes erupted in North East Delhi between supporters and opponents of the Citizenship Amendment Act and  later, Khalid was arrested along with several other activists. The violence took the lives of 53 people and injured hundreds more. Muslims made up the majority of those slain.

In connection with the Delhi violence case, Khalid and two students from the city’s Jamia Millia Islamia University, Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar, have been accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Zargar was granted bail on humanitarian grounds in June 2020.
