Police in north Kashmir’s Sopore Saturday arrested a man for “provoking” his wife to commit suicide.
According to a police official, the model town of Sopore witnessed a recent suicide case of a woman. Subsequently, a case was registered, and an investigation was initiated.
The officer revealed that during the investigation, they discovered evidence indicating that the deceased lady’s husband had encouraged her to commit suicide.
Consequently, the husband has been taken into custody under section 306 IPC and is presently behind bars.
Earlier, the family of the deceased had raised suspicion about the husband’s role in her death.
According to the family, they had discovered an audio recording of victim’s last call, where she seemed to be asking for help and her voice appeared to be suppressed, hinting at possible strangulation.
The family alleged that her husband was a serial offender and was regularly beating her wife.
Meanwhile, the family is seeking a thorough probe into the matter.
“We cannot simply accept this [abetment to suicide under 306 IPC] as the final explanation. We strongly urge the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, taking into account all available evidence, including the call recording where the victim passionately pleaded for help before her tragic demise,” the family said.
