The extended family of Sameera Fazili in Kashmir is jubilant ever since the Biden-Harris Transition named her as the deputy director of the White House’s National Economic Council.
The Council was chosen to manage the economic policy-making process and provide guidance to the President of the United States. Fazili’s parents wanted her to be a physician initially, but she never agreed.
This is the second appointment of a Kashmir-born expert under the United States regime of Biden-Kamala. Biden selected a young Kashmir-born woman, Aishah Shah, as one of the main functionaries in the Digital Strategy Team of his White House at the end of the year 2020
The appointment of Fazili ignited jubilation in her extended Srinagar family. “We are very proud. Everybody in Kashmir should be proud as it is a proud moment for the whole Kashmir,” her uncle Rouf Fazili told a news agency, Press Trust Of India (PTI). “It is a great honour and respect for every one of us and a great occasion.”
“She was not born here and her parents left the Valley in 1970-71, but she has a strong affinity with Kashmir,” Rouf said. “The last time she visited the valley was in 2007.”
According to the PTI, Rouf did not get a chance to speak to his niece due to her busy schedule. “But, I spoke to the rest of the family, and, obviously, they are very happy!” he said.
Another close family member of Fazili said, “Her parents wanted her to be a physician, but she had other plans. Her inclination was towards public service.”
Prior to her role in Biden’s rule, Fazili was at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where she served as a Director of an engagement or the community and economic development
