Srinagar: The Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday lashed out at the Jammu and Kashmir police saying the department’s behavior since the last one year has raised many eyebrows and many unanswered questions.
PDP made the remarks in reaction to The Kashmir Walla story that highlighted the police whip on online users who vanished after being questioned by the department.
In a series of tweets the party questioned the institution, “We have been observing with deep concern that the institution — meant for maintaining law and order while maintaining highest standards of professionalism and political neutrality -seemingly only political institution enjoying patronage of a particular ideology & political space It is for the institution of police to decide whether it wants to be seen as a shakha of a particular political ideology or an institution which is apolitical and performs duty without biases and prejudices and without favours,”
Adding that the several police stations have reduced themselves to Shakhas of particular political ideology at the cost of its reputation, “Unfortunately, the impression is that several police stations, including cyber cell which had earned notoriety for choking all forms of democratic spaces of dissent, have reduced themselves to Shakhas of a particular political ideology at the cost of its institutional reputation and professional propriety,”
The PDP also criticised some officers of the department too, “Some officers enjoying ashirvad are the region’s de facto unelected MLAs, and political opinion makers as they have unbridled powers to suppress other shades of opinions,”
Adding that the behaviour of the police as an institution since the last one year has raised many eyebrows and many unanswered questions. Is the police department happy to depict itself in bad light and as an unofficial arm of a particular ideology?”
