Close on the heels of centre’s invitation to mainstream leaders, the government here released Peoples Democratic Party leader Sartaj Madni.

A senior police officer confirmed to a local news agency, Global News Service (GNS) the release of Madni, maternal uncle of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

On 6 August 2019, a day after the Government of India abrogated the Jammu and Kashmir’s limited autonomy amid massive security and communication clampdown, Madni was detained from his residence in Anantnag.

Later, he was moved to SKICC Srinagar and placed under detention with other leaders who are now being invited to hold talks.

Subsequently, Madni, former Deputy Speaker in the erstwhile Legislative Assembly, was detained under sections 107 and 151 of CrPC.

On 5 February last year, Madni was shifted from the SKICC to a government guest house at Gupkar. (GNS)
