Kulgam police has warned of a “stern legal action” against the persons who have been writing on social media that an individual had allegedly committed suicide after his house was damaged in a gunfight last month. The police claimed that these allegations are “totally baseless” as “no house was damaged during the gunfight that took place in the south Kashmir district on 17 July”.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that a resident of Nagnad DH Pora village of Kulgam district had committed suicide by hanging himself inside his house. The police said that “some miscreants are spreading sensitive updates regarding the matter that could emerge as [a] great threat to peace and order.”

Superintendent of Police, Kulgam, Gurinder Pal Singh appealed to all the people to make use of social media platforms in a careful and positive manner, as per a statement issued to the media. Warning people against posting such content online, he said: “whosoever attempts to instigate the public by spreading baseless rumours and fake news having potential to disturb peace will be dealt strictly under law and stern action will be taken against those who will be found involved in such activities.”
