Eight children among eleven people were killed and seven others injured after a single-storey house collapsed on another structure in Malwani area of Mumbai, reported Press Trust of India quoting police.
An official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) told PTI that the accident took place around 11:15 pm on Wednesday at New Collector’s Compound of Abdul Hameed Road in Malvani area. As per the report, municipal officials had earlier said that the one-storey house had collapsed and were now informed about the collapse of the three-storey building.
Fire brigade and other agencies immediately rushed to the spot and started the search and rescue operation, the BMC official told PTI. Eight children and three adults died in the incident, he said.
Quoting the Police, PTI reported that the building was constructed illegally and there were serious flaws in its structure.
Police said the building had suffered a lot due to cyclonic storm Tauktae last month. “Had proper precautionary measures been taken, the incident which happened on Wednesday could have been avoided.”
“We have registered a case under IPC section 304 and will take appropriate action,” the police officer said.
The officer said that a case is also being registered against the contractor and owner of the building. “The contractor has been taken into custody for questioning.”
