Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a Covid shot this morning at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital.

He became the first beneficiary in the second phase of nationwide vaccination against the novel virus.

PM Modi took a dose of the home-grown Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which has been linked to vaccine hesitancy because of its clinical trials status. He also showcased something of three poll-bound states – Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

“Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” PM Modi tweeted, sharing an image of himself taking first dose of the vaccine.

PM Modi also urged all eligible to take the vaccine as the country began vaccinating people over 60 and those over 45 who have illnesses.

“Together, let us make India COVID-19 free,” he said.
