Jammu and Kashmir Police today arrested a reporter of a local magazine in an “extortion” case and recovered “one lakh rupees” from his possession.

The accused, Ashiq Mir, works at a weekly English magazine Kashmir Crown.

News agency GNS reported that police arrested Ashiq Mir in connection with FIR 177/2021 under IPC sections of 384 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

A police officer has confirmed the arrest of Mir, according to GNS. He said the court of jurisdiction has sent the accused to seven day police remand and more arrests are expected in coming days.

“Rupees one lakh extortion money has been recovered so far from him (Mir) and the investigations are underway,” the officer, as per the news agency, said.

When contacted, Kashmir Crown editor Shahid Imran said the case against the reporter is “false and frivolous”.

“The law will take its own course,” he said.
