A Delhi court on Monday granted interim bail of seven days to Umar Khalid to attend his sister’s wedding, reported India Today.
Khalid, charged with the stringent UAPA over allegations of “larger conspiracy to provoke riots”, has been in jail since September 2020.
The interim bail will begin on 23 December and Umar Khalid will have to surrender on December 30, as per the order.
Earlier this month, Delhi’s Karkardooma court acquitted student activist Umar Khalid and United Against Hate member Khalid Saifi in one of the cases linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. The two were released on bail in this case but remain behind bars in connection with different cases. Umar Khalid and Khalid Saifi have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and are currently in judicial custody.
Umar Khalid was denied bail by the Delhi High Court in October this year in the Delhi riots case.
The Delhi High Court had observed that the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and 2020 North-East Delhi riots were prima-facie orchestrated at various conspiratorial meetings which were attended by Khalid, adding that the allegations against him are prima facie true and embargo under UAPA is attracted, reads the report.
