The BBC correspondent in Myanmar has gone missing on Friday after he was taken away by unidentified men Friday, the British public broadcaster said in a statement.
Aung Thura, the BBC’s correspondent in Myanmar, was taken away at local time 5:30 GMT on Friday in the capital city of Nay Pyi Thaw, the statement added, as the country simmers under a military lockdown. The BBC further called on the Myanmar authorities to help locate Thura.
On 1 February, Myanmar’s military had couped on the infamous icon Aung San Su Kyi, took over hospitals and communication services. The coup has met with civilian protests, wherein nearly 150 people have been killed in military action.
“We are extremely concerned about our BBC News Burmese reporter, Aung Thura, who was taken away by unidentified men in the Buremese capital,” the statement added. “The BBC takes the safety of all its staff in Myanmar very seriously and we are doing everything we can to find Aung Thura.”
“We call on the authorities to help locate him and confirm that he is safe. Aung is an accredited BBC journalist with many years of reporting experience covering events in Nay Pyi Thaw,” the statement concluded.
