In a shocking revelation, phone numbers of more than 40 journalists in India were on the hacking list of an unidentified agency using Israeli spyware Pegasus, reported The Wire.

The leaked list of potential targets includes the numbers of top journalists at big media houses including the Hindustan Times, India Today, Network18, The Hindu and Indian Express. The list also includes some journalists from Kashmir.

The Wire’s analysis of the data shows that most of the names were targeted between 2018 and 2019, in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections. The Israeli company, NSO Group, which sells Pegasus, has claimed that it only offers its spyware to “vetted governments”.
