Tens of thousands of people on Monday took part in the last rites of Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Shakoor Ahmad Dar at his ancestral village Sopat-Tangpora in Devsar area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

According to the reports, around six funerals were held from 8 am to 11: 30 am for the militant at a big ground in the village.

Despite the internet ban and strict restrictions, a flood of people poured onto streets for the last glimpse of the dead militant. The militant was taken to the local graveyard amid the chants of pro-freedom and pro-Pakistan slogans.

According to the locals, at least three militants surfaced during the funeral and offered a gun-salute to their fallen associate. Dar was killed along with an associate during a gunfight with the government forces in Qaimoh area of adjoining Kulgam district. While the third associate was captured alive.

A civilian was also killed during the clashes that erupted near the site of the gunfight.

Meanwhile, following JRL leadership’s call, a complete shutdown is being observed across Kashmir to mourn the civilian and militant killings.

The Kashmir Walla needs you, urgently. Only you can do it.

We have always come to you for help: The Kashmir Walla is battling at multiple fronts — and if you don’t act now, it would be too late. 2020 was a year like no other and we walked into it already battered. The freedom of the press in Kashmir was touching new lows as the entire population was gradually coming out of one of the longest communication blackouts in the world.

We are not a big organization. A few thousand rupees from each one of you would make a huge difference.

The Kashmir Walla plans to extensively and honestly cover — break, report, and analyze — everything that matters to you. You can help us.
