There is an atmosphere of fear in India, says Umar Khalid after attack

JNU student Umar Khalid who survived an assassination attempt this afternoon in a high security area in New Delhi said that there was an atmosphere of fear in the country and those who speak against the government  are threatened.

The JNU student was speaking after he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt,”There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The popular student leader was at the venue to attend an event “Khauff Se Azaadi”, put together by an organisation named ‘United Against Hate’.

Fellow JNU student and activist Shehla Rashid is shocked and worried and blamed a section of media for spewing hatred against Khalid,”Shocking and highly condemnable: a guy attacked Umar Khalid from behind and tried to shoot him in Delhi. This is the direct result of hatred whipped up by Republic TV & other hate media. I spoke to Umar. He’s okay, but we should be very very worried about his safety.” She Tweeted.

JNU student and leader Umar Khalid survived an assassination attempt after an unidentified man opened fire at Khalid.

The incident took place outside the Constitution Club in Delhi.

Umar Khalid had filed a complaint alleging death threats in June

Khalid has been in the news for various reasons. Recently he had claimed that the JNU had refused to unblock the process required to submit his PhD thesis.
