Srinagar: In biting cold students rush out of class rooms and flee from the school premises in majority of the government run schools and more so in rural areas but director school education Kashmir has denied to rethink on the timing of closing down secondary schools in Kashmir valley and winter zones of Jammu division, saying that, “Efforts are on to change class rooms into centrally heated rooms to ensure full heating arrangements to the students in government run schools.”

A legion of aggrieved parents called on Kashmir News Service office in Srinagar and said that these days when the temperature has dropped below freezing points and touched much below minus 4, the students find no choice but to rush out of the class rooms in biting cold.

They said, “How come the children can be attentive in classes when biting cold forces them to move out and reach their homes. Neither teachers nor we the parents can ask the children to attend their classes in dithering cold of winter. There is a natural compulsion in closing down the schools from December 1 to end February but undoing the natural compulsion, the authorities of school education department have extended the timing of closing down schools from December 1 to December 15 which is totally an injustice with the children enrolled in government run schools.”

When contacted Director School Education Dr G N Itoo said, “We are not going to rethink on the timing of closure of secondary schools but efforts are on to change class rooms in secondary schools into centrally heated rooms so that students can attend classes without any difficulty in December 2. The matter has been taken up with the government which is likely to take a call very shortly.” (KNS)
