Shutdown in Langate, demand for return of militant’s mortal remains

Srinagar: After the killing of five militants on Thursday Langate area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district is observing a complete shutdown today to mourn the killing as a family claims one among them is their kin – a local militant, Muzaffar Ahmad Mir.

The army had claimed to have killed five unidentified militants in dense forests of Dooniwari, Rafiabad on Thursday. Among them was Muzaffar Ahmad Mir – from Langate area, who was identified by his family when the pictures of the bodies had gone viral on social media. “All the five militants killed in the area were non-locals and belonged to Lashkar e Toiba militant organization,” the army had said.

The area’s shops and business establishments are closed today to mourn the militant killings. In response, forces have been deployed at many places of the town to maintain law and order.

Mir’s family has approached police with a claim that one among the five militants killed was their kin. Reportedly, Mir had gone missing a week ago from his residence and joined the militant ranks.

According to the locals the family has been assured that if their claim is found true, the body will be exhumed and handed over to them.
