Suspected rebels attacked a policeman with an axe before decamping his rifle in Pattan area of North Kashmir, some 35 kilometres away from Srinagar, police officials said.
Firdous Ahmad Baba a constable of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 16, who was posted in the main market when a group of rebels attacked him with an axe and injuring him seriously before fleeing the spot safely along with his service rifle. He received injuries in his head and and was taken to the hospital for an immediate treatment where his condition was said to be critical.
Police spokesman confirmed the incident and told The Kashmir Walla that the police and army have cordoned the area and the search operations were going on to nab the attackers.
A local news agency while quoting Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) North Ghulam Hassan Bhat stated that unknown person carried out an attack on the police personal on Saturday with the Axe and got away with his service rifle. “We can say that some unknown person carried out this attack. Whether that was a militant attack or not, cannot be ascertained yet,” Bhat said.
