Police detains a youth in Sopore for anti-Israel protests

The Jammu and Kashmir Police, Monday, arrested a local youth hailing from Nowpora, Sopore town of North Kashmir after he participated in the anti-Israel protests last night.

Shakir Showkat Bhat, 20, a student of BCA, had participated in the protest when hundreds of college going students came out on the streets against the Gaza killings.

Shakir’s brother Mohmmad Umer Bhat told The Kashmir Walla that around 4 pm they received a phone call from Nowpora police and were informed to bring Shakir to the police station for some work. “Once we reached there we were surprised when the SHO informed us that Shakir was called by Dy. SP himself and he was to be taken to the Sopore police station,” he said.

He added that when next morning they we went to the police station they were not allowed to meet him, but had seen him from a distance. “His hand was injured due to the torture.”

Shakir’s family alleges that the police was torturing him to provide them with the names of other students who shouted anti-India slogans during the rally. “How could he name them, when hundreds were protesting against Isreal.”

When we contacted the concerned SHO he said that talk to the senior officers. We contacted the Superintendent of Police, Sopore but he denied comments, citing he is on leave.

The freedom of the press in Kashmir was touching new lows as the entire population was gradually coming out of one of the longest communication blackouts in the world.

We are not a big organization. A few thousand rupees from each one of you would make a huge difference.

The Kashmir Walla plans to extensively and honestly cover — break, report, and analyze — everything that matters to you. You can help us.
