Srinagar: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress are coming together into alliance to form the government with National Conference (NC) as an outside supporter.

Sources in all three political parties confirmed that there have been several meetings between them to chalk out a strategy of government formation. “We have been in touch with the Congress for some time now,” said a PDP leader. “It will be a coalition government of us with Congress and National Conference together, to keep the BJP away.”

It is likely that the former chief minister and the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti will be addressing media today over the developments, sources said.

Another PDP leader, who was in the party meeting, confirmed that the government is being formed soon.

After the 2014 assembly elections, the PDP 28 MLAs, while as NC has 15 and Congress has 12, making the total 55 seats in the 87-member assembly of the state. It gives them clear majority to form the government.

News channel NDTV on Wednesday quoted sources saying that the “talks between the three parties are at an advanced stage, in order to stymie the BJP’s attempts to take power after engineering defections.”

According to the channel’s report the Congress leadership has “approved a grand alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP and Omar Abdullah’s National Conference to checkmate the BJP in the state where six-month central rule ends next month. An announcement is expected today or tomorrow.”

The state has been under governor’s rule since 19 June 2018 after the BJP pulled out of the coalition government with the PDP. The governor’s rule cannot be extended as it is completing six-month period on 19 December. But if the government if formed the state will not go under President’s rule.

The three parties have come together only after the BJP has been strongly supporting a third-front led by People’s Conference under the leadership of Sajad Lone, with support of rebel PDP leaders like Imran Ansari.
