Paradise or Road to Hell | Since 2008, 5757 accidents kill 920

Over the past three years, road accidents have claimed 920 lives in Kashmir valley while about 11,000 persons have sustained injuries.

According to the data available with the traffic department, 1802 accidents took place in 2008, 2135 in 2009 and 1775 in 2010. This year, till ending April, 45 accidents have taken place so far.

The Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar city, Maqsood-ul-Zamaan blamed the poor condition of roads as the main cause of accidents in Kashmir valley. “The condition of our roads is the major cause of accidents and in order to stop more accidents, we have to better the conditions of our roads,” he said.

He also said a whole lot of people did not follow the traffic rules. “We lack experienced drivers in our valley and they don’t follow the rules and regulations issued by the traffic department which sometimes may cause harm to the lives of people,” Zamaan said.
Zamaan also said all the commuters do not walk carefully on roads and hardly use footpaths that also lead to rise in accidents.

However, people blame Sumo drivers for the rise in accidents. “Sumo drivers drive harshly and are thus more prone to accidents. With the increasing number of the Sumos in the city, rate of accidents has also increased,” said, Abdul Majeed, a bank employee.
Apart from human losses, the road accidents have also damaged around 7000 vehicles since 2008.
