Sopore is 55 kilometres north of the Indian Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, in the district Varmul.

“Militants opened firing on a police party while they were clearing the traffic jam in Iqbal market area in Sopore,” the Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Imtiyaz Hussain told PTI.

In the firing, a sixty-year-old civilian got killed and Constable Kishor Kumar of Indian Reserve Police (16th battalion) was hit by a bullet in the neck.

“The militants snatched the AK-47 rifle of the injured cop before fleeing from the scene,”  added Hussain.
