Media not allowed to work, despite no curfew

By News Desk

Despite the government’s claims of having lifted the curfew in Kashmir after six days of complete siege, the media is still not being allowed to work freely.

Sajad Raja, a photographer with Kashmir Times, who was present at Maisuma area of Srinagar this afternoon to cover clashes between the protesters and the paramilitary forces, says, “Just as I tried to go inside the area, they (paramilitary forces) started pelting stones at me.”

They have blocked the entire area with barbed wires and are not allowing journalists to move, Sajad added.

A police officer present at the spot, when asked why they (journalists) are not being allowed to go inside the area when there is no curfew in place today replied, “So what if there is no curfew, I will not allow you and that is that.”

A spokesperson of the police who was contacted about incident said, “We have no information about it but we will look into the matter.”

The working of the media in the valley has been severely restricted since the government imposed curfew in Kashmir valley, last Saturday after Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail.

Meanwhile, valley continues to remain tense as three people have been injured in clashes between the protesters and paramilitary forces in downtown area of Srinagar. Hundreds of people carried out protest march in the old city of Srinagar, holding banners and shouting Pro-freedom slogan.
