PressThe distributors and hawkers in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district Thursday accused police for not allowing them to distribute newspapers during wee hours.

“A police party visited my shop during wee hours and didn’t allow me to open up the bundles of newspapers. They directed me not to distribute newspapers in the district,” said Hilal Ahmed, a distributor.

He said that during wee hours he collected newspapers from Hyderpora but the policemen from Humhama police station didn’t allow him to proceed with newspapers to the district. “Somehow, I managed to convince them and they let me go along with the bundles of newspapers. But to my utter surprise police in Budgam stopped me to distribute these papers among hawkers,” said Hilal.

Superintendent of Police, Budgam, Uttam Chand said that it is totally baseless. “It is totally wrong. We have not stopped anyone from distributing newspapers in the district. You can confirm from people, so many of them got the copies of news papers,” Utam Chand told a new agency, adding that the police don’t believe in muzzling the freedom of press. (CNS)
