Local body polls will re-establish grassroot democracy in JK: Rajnath

The Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said on Friday that local body polls in Jammu and Kashmir will have historic significance and re-establish long overdue grassroot democracy, PTI reported.

He said that Government of India (GOI) is providing all possible support including central forces for smooth conduct of these polls in Jammu & Kashmir:

In a statement, the home minister said the central government will provide all support, including central forces, for smooth conduct of panchayat and urban local body polls.

“These local body elections will have a historic significance in many aspects. The local bodies’ elections in Jammu and Kashmir will re-establish the long overdue grassroots level democracy in the state,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Elections to local bodies in Jammu and Kashmir are due next month.

Pro-freedom leaders and two main regional parties have called for a poll boycott to local body elections.
