Kashmir journalists hold sit in protest, seek colleague’s release

Journalists of Kashmir on Monday staged a sit-in protest against the arrest of journalist Aasif Sultan, at press colony in Srinagar.

The protest demonstration which was organized by the Kashmir Journalist Association was later on joined by Kashmir Working Journalist Association, Kashmir Press Photographers Association and Kashmir Press Videographers Association. The protesting journalists were demanding the release of journalist Aasif Sultan, who was arrested, by Jammu and Kashmir Police last month.

Aasif Sultan who works as an assistant editor forKashmir Narrator was sent to the Central Jail Srinagar in judicial custody until September 22, by the  High court.

Police have said they arrested the journalist for having ties with militants .

However, the publication for which  insisted Sultan was arrested for his narrative literary reportage piece  on Burhan Wani, the new age militant leader whose killing in 2016 summer plunged Kashmir into unrest.

Various journalist associations including, the Kashmir Working Journalist Association, the Kashmir Journalist Association, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Indian Journalist Union (IJU), and the Kashmir Editors’ Guild (KEG) have been calling for his earliest release.
