Srinagar: As millions converge on the Arbaeen (forty days after death of Imam Hussain) to pay respect to grandson of prophet Muhammad in Iraqi city of Karbala, people from different countries are showing solidarity to people of Kashmir by staging protests in the city.

Carrying posters and placards that have solidarity messages for Kashmiris, pilgrims who are visiting the grave of Imam Hussain are protesting against the recent killing spree in Kashmir.

The pictures of the silent protests have become viral on social media and are seen as a strong form of protest.

The placards read “Oh God help people of Kashmir” and “Kashmir is not alone,” at a spot where pilgrims from various regions hold solidarity with oppressed nations like Palestine.

More than 20 million people, mostly Shia Muslims, are expected to turn up for the event of Arbaeen in the holy city of Karbala.

Arbaeen is one of the largest annual gatherings in the world where millions across the world converge in the holy city.

Eyewitnesses in Karbala told The Kashmir Walla over phone that the pilgrims from Iran, Lebanon, Iraq , Pakistan and other countries staged silent protest against the “oppression in Kashmir.”

“Not only people from Kashmir but even non-Kashmiris were holding placards calling out the barbarism of India,” said a Kashmiri pilgrim from Karbala.

He also added it is one of those events where Shia Muslims pledge their allegiance to Imam Hussain and vow to stand against oppression of any form in the world. “The very essence of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice was to stand against the tyranny. And people here have definitely followed his message,” he said.

Another pilgrim said that the pilgrims were moved by the recent killings in the Valley where more than 38 people have been killed in just two weeks. “We felt this is the best place to show the world what is going on in our Valley, our land is burning,” he lamented.

October has been a bloody month for Kashmir, as militants have been killed in various gunfights and also civilians during clashes.
