Joint coordinated effort a need of the hour: Hurriyat (M)

By News Desk

While calling for a “joint coordinated effort” on part of the separatist leadership, Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that in the wake of the current situation, the future strategy to move forward would be devised only after taking suggestions from all the constituents of the conglomerate.

In view of the ongoing serious situation, the Mirwaiz stressed that it was the need of the hour that pro-resistance leadership should sit together and devise a “joint coordinated effort” to take forward the freedom movement and mission of Martyr Afzal Guru and thousands of other like him.

While paying rich tributes to Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was sentenced to death at Delhi’s Tihar jail on February 9, the Mirwaiz today said the Guru was not given a fair trial and the hanging was carried out to get political leverage out of it. He said the hanging represents the miscarriage of justice and aptly exposes the judicial and democratic credentials of India.

Mirwaiz demanded return of the body of Afzal Guru who has been buried in Tihar Jail. He said it was highly regrettable that his family members were not informed about his hanging. Hence, he said they could not meet him one last time and thus Indian government and democracy hurt the Islamic beliefs and basic fundamentals of humanity.

Calling Guru as a pious soul, he said his sacrifice has given new life to the ongoing freedom movement. He expressed concern over the continued detention of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and condemned it in strongest terms.

Mirwaiz said it was highly regrettable on part of the authorities for arresting Hurriyat leaders like Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan, Hakim Abdul Rashid, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza including hundreds of other youth who demanded the return of the body of martyr Afzal Guru. He said that restrictions and arrests won’t deter Kashmiris from pursuing their much cherished goal- freedom from Indian occupation.

After a prolonged detention in New Delhi in the aftermath of the hanging of Guru, the Mirwaiz today arrived at Srinagar where he was once again placed under house detention by the authorities.

The Hurriyat Spokesman in a statement here denounced the house detention of the chairman. He said that by putting restrictions on his movement and placing him under house arrest in Srinagar and Delhi, snapping his communications, exemplifies the worst form of dictatorial democracy.

The spokesman said Mirwaiz was arrested by large contingent of police on his return to Srinagar and then put under house arrest at his Nageen residence.

According to programme, spokesman said that Mirwaiz had to address the joint session of the Hurriyat executive and general council at party headquarters. He said Mirwiaz was afterwards scheduled to visit Sopore to condole with the family of martyr Afzal Guru.

“However, once again resorting to wanton use of force and terror, the tyrant authorities put restrictions on the movement of the APHC Chairman,” spokesman said, adding, “It was highly condemnable action on part of the government,” he added.

Spokesman said that the forces who have laid restrictions on the house did not let the media to attend the proposed press conference to be convened by Mirwaiz at his residence. Hence, they have to return back without meeting the Mirwaiz.

Meanwhile, earlier in the afternoon the party had called a press conference but the restrictions outside his house at Nageen residence didn’t let that happen. The polic had put barbed wire barricade and stopped journalists from going close to his house.
